Cerebral Cortex Flashcards
What is the purpose of association cortices?
- They are for cognition
- They connect different sensory and motor inputs with one another to accomplish actions like attending, identifying, recognizing relationships, planning
Describe the cellular and structural organization of the neocortex.
- Neocortex = newer cortices, evolutionarily speaking
- Organized both horziontally and vertically with interneurons that coordinate cross talk between neurons in the same layer and between layers
- Have different types of cells depending on layer of cortex
- Myelination varies depending on layer
What is the function of the premotor cortex?
What is the insula cortex?
What is the cingulate cortex?
What do these have in common?
Important for pain perception and social emotions
Important for error detection and correction
Both are hidden cortices
Everything enters the hippocampus via the […] cortex
Entorhinal
A lesion of the somatosensory or parietal association cortex on the right side of the brain would cause […]
Hemi-neglect on left side
Why do we only see left hemi neglect instead of right?
What is prosopagnosia?
The inability to recognize faces due to damage to the inferior temoral cortex (fusiform cortex)
A lesion to broca’s area results in what kind of aphasia?
A lesion to wernicke’s area results in what kind of aphasia?
Inability to produe speech, can still understand
Inability to understand speech, can still produce speech
What happens to a patient when the corpus callosum has been cut?
