Cerebellum Flashcards
Vermis
Fastigial vestibular
- motor function- balance, eye movement, reflexes
- cognitive function- autonomic arousal, limbic regulationg
Intermediate
Paravermal hemisphere
- motor function- sensorimotor integration, movement execution
- cognitive function- simple verbal responses to commands
Lateral
Lateral hemisphere -motor function- prep and planning movement fine motor dexterity eye movements imagined movements - cognitive function- verbal association rule based learning working memory problem solving monitoring performance temporal perception
Purkinje cells
inhibitory- GABA
control thalamus and motor cortex through the deep nuclei
Unilateral lesion to lateral lobes
Asthenia- loss of muscle strength
atonia- loss of muscle tone
Ataxia
Asynergia
Difficulty coordinating muscular actions
decomposition of movement
complex movements become broken down into single movements
Dysmetria
poorly directed movements
intention tremor
when executing movements
deviations from the line of movement
desdiadochokinesia
Midline cerebellar lesions
Nystagmus
scanning speech
postural disorders
Essential tremor
overactivity of the inferior olive
ETOH used GABA- agonist- increases activity of purkinje cells
GLU antagonist- decreases effect of Deep nucleus on thalamus and eventually the cortex
