Central Venous Catheters Flashcards
1
Q
What does CVP reflect?
A
right atrial pressure
2
Q
What does RAP reflect?
A
right ventricular end diastolic pressure when tricuspid is open
3
Q
T/F: CVP can differentiate between right, left heart or lung problems
A
false; cannot
4
Q
What are the indications?
A
- give fluids, drugs, blood, TPN
- monitor fluid status
- blood sampling
5
Q
What are the sites for insertion?

- thrombophlebitis
- thomboembolism
- vasses damage during insertion
7
Q
What is the equipment?
A
- 3 way stopcock
- IV solution
- CVP catheter - up to 3 ports
- transducer of water manometer
8
Q
What are the waveforms?
A
- “A” wave in the PR interval
- “C” wave at the end of the QRS complex
- “V” near the end of the “T” wave
9
Q
What are causes of low CVP (less than 2 mmHg)?
A
- hypovolemia
- vasodilation by drugs of increase in temp
- spontaneous inspiration
- transducer below right atrium
- air bubbles or leaks
10
Q
What are the causes of high CVP (greater than 6 mmHg)?
A
- volume overload
- infusion of blood/fluids
- cardiac tamponade
- right/left heart failure
- tricuspid stenosis/regurg
- pulmonary valve stenosis
- pulmonary embolism/hypertension
- increased intrathorax pressure
