short form vs long form
There are two versions, the short-form and the long-form census, distributed randomly, and every household receives either the short-form or long-form Census of Population.
American Community Survey
The American Community Survey provides information about the social and economic needs of your community every year. The census is conducted every ten years to provide an official count of the entire U.S. population to Congress.
Census blocks
smallest unit of measurement for census
census block groups
2nd smallest unit for census
census tracts
3rd smallest unit for census (blocks, block groups, tracts)
census designated places (CDP)
The Bureau of the Census defines a place as a concentration of population;
a place may or may not have legally prescribed limits, powers, or functions.
This concentration of population must have a name, be locally recognized,
and not be part of any other place.
linear/straight line population projection method
Linear growth occur by adding the same amount in each unit of time.
exponential curve population projection
The key concept of exponential growth is that the population growth rate —the number of organisms added in each generation—increases as the population gets larger.
trend extrapolation
his technique simply takes a historical trend over time and extrapolates where the trend line will be if extended into the future. The general assumption is that whatever happened in the past will continue in the future.
market share
Out of total purchases of a customer of a product or service, what percentage goes to a company defines its market share. In other words, if consumers as a whole buy 100 soaps, and 40 of which are from one company, that company holds 40% market share.
location quotient
An LQ is a simple ratio used to determine the concentration or dominance of a particular industry in a region (i.e. Local Government area) in comparison to a larger reference or benchmark region (i.e. State or Nation). Simply divide the Lismore % by the Regional NSW % to calculate the LQ, 2.1 / 0.9 = 2.2. In general, an LQ above 1 indicates that there is a degree of specialization or concentration in that particular industry within the area,
