Cellular Response and Disease Flashcards
Stress
A state produced by a change in the environment that is perceived as challenging, threatening, or damaging to a person, dynamic balance or equilibrium.
Prolonged stress will cause…
…a system to fail leading to cell alterations,
injury, or death.
What are some causes of cellular injury?
There are 7 outlined in this lecture.
- Physical agents
- Chemical agents
- Infectious agents
- Nutritional imbalances
- Hypoxia
- Disordered immune responses
- Genetic disorders
Cellular Injury
Occurs when cell is unable to maintain homeostasis in the face of a stimulus.
Cellular Adaptation
Allows the stressed tissue to survive or maintain function. The most significant changes include change in size and number.
Types of Cellular Adaptation
There are four outlined in lecture.
- Atrophy (size)
- Hypertrophy (size)
- Hyperplasia (number)
- Dysplasia (number)
Atrophy
Decrease in size of cells
Hypertrophy
Increase in size of cells
Hyperplasia
Increase in the number of cells
Dysplasia
Deranged cell growth-varied size,
shape, and organization
What are cellular responses to injury?
There are two we discussed in lecture.
- Apoptosis
- Necrosis
Apoptosis
Genetically programmed degenerative change. This is normal.
Necrosis
An irreversible process in which the membrane disintegrates, lysis takes place, and the body initiates an inflammatory reaction with only remnants remaining. This is not normal.
