Cells 2.4 - Cell to Organism [ARCHIVE] Flashcards
What are organs made up of?
Organs are made up of at least 2 different types of tissues that work together to complete a task.
What are organ systems?
Organ systems are systems of organisms containing 2 or more different organs that work together to complete a job.
What are some examples of plant organs?
Roots, stems, leaves and flowers.
What are xylem?
Xylem transport water from roots in long thin tubes with strong walls.
What are phloem?
Phloem transport glucose from leaves to the other plant parts.
What do leaves on a plant do?
-Where photosynthesis occurs, they have a large surface area to collect sunlight.
-Leaves contain guard cells called stomata, conducting cells and photosynthetic cells.
What do roots on a plant do?
-Secure plant to the ground
-Absorb water and nutrients.
-They contain root hair cells, conducting cells, structural cells.
What do stems on a plant do?
-They hold plants upright and transport substances around plants.
- They contain structural cells and conducting cells.
-Also green stems contain some photosynthetic cells.
What is photosynthesis?
- Occurs in chloroplasts in plant cells.
- Requires chlorophyll, (which is a green pigment) and sunlight.
- It is the conversion of carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen.
What are the two types of stem cells?
-Embryonic stem cells: They are harvested from early stage embryos and can turn into any type of cells.
-Adult stem cells: They can only turn into cells of the tissue or organ they reside in.
