Cells 2.2 - Natural building blocks [ARCHIVE] Flashcards
What is a cell?
A cell is the smallest living body that makes up all living organisms.
What is an organelle?
An organelle is a small part of a cell that has a specific role like mitochondria
What organelles are found in animal cells?
Nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, vacuole, mitochondria, lysosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes
What organelles are found in plants cells?
Nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, vacuole, cell wall, chloroplast
What organelles are found in fungal cells?
Nucleus, vacuole, cell wall, cell membrane.
How do you make a wet mount?
- Put your specimen in the centre of the glass slide.
- Add a drop of water on top of the specimen.
- Put the cover slip on at a 45-degree angle and lower slowly.
What is an organelle in a cell?
Different parts of a cell with specific jobs. e.g. Nucleus, Cell membrane, Cytoplasm.
What is the function of a Nucleus?
To control the cell, it controls all chemical reactions and how the cell develops and reproduces.
What is the function of the Cell membrane?
The skin that holds the cell together also controls what comes in and out of the cell.
What is the function of cytoplasm?
Watery, jelly-like mixture that gives the cell its shape and protects it.
What is the function of vacuoles?
They handle waste products.
Only seen under an electron microscope, What is the function of mitochondria?
They release energy from food.
Only seen under an electron microscope, What is the function of lysosomes?
Disposal units that get rid of wastes from the cell.
