Cells Flashcards
What is the semipermeable membrane?
The semipermaeble membrane is the cell membrane in Animal cells that allows only certain molecule or ions to pass through it.
What does the nucleus contain?
The nucleus contains the genetic material (DNA).
What is known as the powerhouse of the cell?
The Mitochondria.
What is the job of the mitochondria?
The place where aerobic respiration occurs, producing energy needed for the cell to survive and function and contain enzymes for cellular respiration.
Where is the cell wall always drawn on a diagram and why?
The cell wall is always drawn after the cell membrane because they are filled with water and are not sappouse to burst so they have an extra layer after the cell membrane to protect the plant cell from bursting.
What organelles does the animal cell contain?
Name all 5 and with the definations.
The animal cell contains the following:
Nucleus-contains genetic information.
Mitochondria-WHere aerobic respiration takes place.
Robosomes-Where protein synthesis takes place.
Cell membrane-Controls what goes in and out of the cell.
Cytoplasm-where most of the chemical reaction takes place.
Why can’t you find chloroplast in plant cells that are in the soil?
Because the chloroplast contains a pigment called chlorophyll and that pigment is for sunlight and there is no sunlight in the soil so it won’t be there.
Which group do the animal and plant cells belong to?
They belong to a group of cells called Eukaryotic cells.Eukaryotic cells are cells that have a nucleus.
What organelles does the plant cell contain?
Name all 7 and with the definations.
Nucleus-contains genetic information.
Mitochondria-WHere aerobic respiration takes place.
Robosomes-Where protein synthesis takes place.
Cell membrane-Controls what goes in and out of the cell.
Cytoplasm-where most of the chemical reaction takes place.
Cell wall-protects the cell from brusting from water and strengths the cells.
Permanent vacoule-Where the cell sap is stores(a weak solution of salf and sugar)
Chloroplast-Where photosynthesis occur.
What are prokaryotic cells?
A prokaryote is a single-celled organism that lacks a nucleus.
What are eukaryotic cells?
Eukaryotic cells are cells that have a nucleus.
What are the differences in eukaryotic and prokaytic cells?
Eukaryotic cells are larger and prokaryotic cells are smaller.
Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus and mitochondria but prokaryotic cells don’t have any of those.
Eukaryotic cells don’t have circular DNA but prokaryotic cells have circular DNA.
Where do bacteria cells (prokaryotic cells) contain genetic material?
They have an infinite loop called PLASMIDS that contains the genetic material.
Give one way that plasmids can be usefull?
Althought plasmids spread through other bacteria really quickly they can be cut in half by chemical reaction like catalysts and we can put a different genes in them from differnet types of cells for example a human genes than that will help us create medicine for our needs which make them usefull.
How is a root hair cell specialised for its function?
It has hair all around it which increases the surface area of the cell allowing it to absorb lots of water and minerals more effectively.
