Cell Types | Gen Bio / STEM 4 Flashcards
Unspecialized cells have the ability to develop into several types of cells.
Stem Cells
- They have no specific function; general.
- A stem cell that does not want to be a specialized cell can divide into more stem cells.
- Found mostly in the bone marrow and umbilical cord.
[ ] are the body’s raw materials — cells from which all other cells with specialized functions are generated.
Stem Cells
TRUE or FALSE
Stem cells are the body’s master cells. All other cells arise from stem cells, including blood cells, nerve cells, and others.
TRUE
Are mineralized connective tissue and a major component of the skeletal system.
Bone Cells
[ ] form bone, which is composed of a matrix of collagen and calcium phosphate materials.
Bone Cells
Mature bone cells that maintain the bone matrix.
Osteocyte
Immature bone cells that secrete organic components of the matrix.
Osteoblast
- Bone making cell
- Makes bone matrix
- Seen / located at the edge of the bone
Produces Osteoblasts
Osteoprogenitor Cell Endosteum
Dissolves the bone matrix; A bone-destroying cell. It is a multinucleate cell that secretes acids and enzymes to dissolve bone matrix.
Osteoclast
Determines blood type and is responsible for transporting oxygen to the cell.
Red Blood Cell
Immune system cells that destroy pathogens and provide immunity.
White Blood Cell
They help clot blood and prevent excessive blood loss due to broken or damaged blood vessels.
Platelets
Cells that are covered by connective tissue protect support, the muscle fiber bundles.
Skeletal Muscle Cell
These cells form involuntary cardiac muscle found in the heart.
