Cell Structures Flashcards
Transport substances throughout the cell. Fuses with the cell membrane to transport substances in and out of cell
Vesicles
Non-permanent masses of stored material within a cell. Glycogen and fat stores
Inclusions
Brings genetic information from nucleus to ribosomes (messenger) and brings amino acids (transfer) to ribosomes. Protein synthesis
RNA
Holds the cells genetic information. Control center
Nucleus
Specialized vesicles containing digestive enzymes that break down unwanted substances
Lysosomes
The use of lysosomes to break down old organelles and cells
Autophagy
Functions as a surface for protein synthesis and transport of materials
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
Degrades waste products and potentially toxic molecules. Hydrogen peroxide to oxygen
Peroxisomes
Synthesizes proteins from amino acids. Helps translate mRNA
Ribosomes
The site of cellular respiration in production of ATP
Mitochondria
Proteins are absorbed, modified, packaged and distributed to their destination
Golgi complex
Important to cellular contractile system. Act as mechanical stiffeners
Microfilaments
Composed of phospholipids embedded with proteins. Selectively permeable
Cell membrane
Helps maintain asymmetrical cell shape and plays a role in complex sell movements
Microtubules
The solution portion of cytoplasm in a cell
Cytosol
