Cell Structure & Diversion Flashcards
What is a Cell?
The basic unit of structure and function in an organism.
What are living things made of?
All living things are made of cells.
What is an Ultrastructure?
The fine detail of a cell.
What is the structure of an Animal Cell?
- Nucleus
- Cytoplasm
- Cell Membrane
What is the structure of a Plant Cell?
- Nucleus
- Cytoplasm
- Cell Membrane
- Chloroplast
- Vacuole
- Cell Wall
What is an Organelle?
A cell component that performs specific functions of a cell.
What is Cytoplasm?
- A clear jelly-like fluid that fills the cell.
- Contains all organelles within the cell.
What are Cell Membranes made of?
Phospholipids and Protein
What is the function of a Cell Membrane?
- Gives support to the cell
- Semi-permeable: Allows some molecules freely in and out
- Retains the cell contents
What is the function of the Nucleus?
It controls the activities of the cell
What is found in the Nucleus?
- Strands of D.N.A
- Chromosomes
What are Ribosomes made of?
- R.N.A
- Protein
What is the function of Ribosomes?
To make protein
What is the function of Vacuoles?
- Provides structural support
- Storage of food, water, and chemicals
What is the function of the Mitochondria?
Supply energy to the cell in a process known as respiration.
What are the parts of the Mitochondria?
- Outer Membrane
- Inner Membrane
- Matrix
- Cristae
What is the function of Chloroplasts?
Photosynthesis
What is the function of the Cell Wall?
To support and strengthen the cell
What is the Cell Wall?
- Rigid
- Gives defined Shape
- Fully Permeable: Allows everything to pass-through
What is the Cell Wall composed of?
Cellulose
What is a Eukaryote?
Organisms whose cells contain a membrane nucleus and membrane-bound organelles.
Where do you find Eukaryotes?
- Plants
- Humans
What is a Prokaryote?
Organisms whose cells lack a membrane nucleus and have no membrane-bound organelles.
Where do you find Prokaryotes?
Bacteria
What is Tissue?
A group of similar cells, modified to carry out the same function.
What is Connective Tissue?
- Cells dispersed in the matrix
- It surrounds and supports body parts
What is an example of Connective Tissue?
Blood has red cells, white cells and platelets carried in Plasma.
What is Nervous Tissue?
It carries electrical impulses
What is an example of Nervous Tissue?
Neurons
What is an Organ?
A number of different tissues working together to carry out one or more functions.
Give an example of Plant Organs.
- Root
- Leaf
- Stem
Give an example of Animal Organs.
Brain, Liver, Heart
What is an Organ System?
A number of organs working together to carry out one or more functions.
What is an example of an Organ System?
- Digestive
- Circulatory
- Nervous
- Muscular
- Skeletal
- Endocrine
- Excretory
- Reproductive
- Immune System
What is Tissue Culture?
The growth of cells in a sterile nutrient medium outside the body
What is an example of Tissue Culture?
- Skin Grafts
- Cancer Research
What is the function of the Cristae in the Mitoc
These folds allow for increased surface area in which chemical reactions can take place.
What are 3 differences between a Plant Cell and an Animal Cell?
Plant Cell:
- Has a Cell Wall
- Has Chloroplasts
- Has Chlorophyll
- Has Large Vacuoles
Animal Cell:
- Has no Cell Wall
- Has no Chloroplasts
- Has no Chlorophyll
- Small/ No Vacuoles
What stain is used when examining a Plant Cell under the microscope?
Iodine
What stain is used when examining an Animal Cell under the microscope?
Methylene blue
Why is a coverslip used?
- Protects the microscope
- Prevents the slide from drying out when it’s being examined.
How is the coverslip applied and why is it applied this way?
At an angle, to prevent air bubbles
What is the function of the Eyepiece Lens?
Look through
What is the function of the Coarse Focus Wheel?
Moves stage up & down
What is the function of the Fine Focus Wheel?
Focus’s Image.
What is the function of the Objective Lens?
Magnifies Image
What is the function of the Stage?
Holds slide.
What is the function of the Diaphragm?
Controls the amount of light.
What is the function of the Light Source?
It’s the source of light.
