Amoeba Flashcards
1
Q
What kingdom are Amoebas part of?
A
Protista
2
Q
Characteristics of Amoeba
A
- Microscopic
- Eukaryotic
- Single Celled
- Heterotroph
3
Q
Where are amoebas found?
A
In freshwater ponds and streams (means higher water concentration in pond)
4
Q
Structure of Amoeba
A
- Cell membrane- Retains cell contents, allows gases diffuse in and out
- Endoplasm- (Inner layer) Food vacuoles, fat droplets and waste products
- Ectoplasm- (Outer layer) Less fluid than Endoplasm
- Flexible Membrane- Constantly changing shape to move
- Nucleus- Controls the cell
- Food vacuoles- Secretes acid to kill prey
- Pseudopodia- helps movements and engulf prey
- Contractile Vacuole- Eliminates water to prevent cell from bursting
5
Q
Contractile Vacuole
A
- Water enters due to osmosis
- Excess water enters contractile vacuole
- Contractile vacuole swells
- Contractile vacuole moves to the edge of cell
- Contractile vacuole bursts and expels water
- Cycle is then repeated
6
Q
What happens during osmosis?
A
Water moves into cytoplasm (water moves from area of high water concentration to area of low water concentration)
7
Q
What if osmosis were to continue?
A
Amoeba would swell and burst
8
Q
How does Amoeba not burst?
A
Excess water moves into contractile vacuole, which expands when full. Responsible for osmoregulation
