cell structure and organisation 🦢 Flashcards
what is the order of the levels of organisation? (smallest to largest)
organelles, cells, tissues, organs, organ systems.
what is the function of the nucleus?
carries genetic info and controls what happens inside the cell.
what is the function of the cytoplasm?
most chemical processes happen here.
what is the function of the cell membrane?
controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell.
what is the function of the cell wall?
made of cellulose - supports the cell.
what is the function of the chloroplasts?
contain chlorophyll (green pigment) which absorbs sunlight - site of photosynthesis.
what is the function of the ribosomes?
all the proteins needed for the cell are synthesised (made) here.
what are only found in plant cells?
cell wall, vacuole, chloroplasts.
what is the function of the vacuole?
contains cell sap - keeps the cell firm.
what is the function of the mitochondria?
site of respiration.
what are found in both animal and plant cells?
nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, ribosomes, and mitochondria.
what are the 8 characteristics that all living organisms share?
Movement
Respiration
Sensitivity
Growth
Reproduction
Excretion
Nutrition
Control of internal environment
