Cell Pathology Flashcards
Reversible cellular injury
Cellular response to stress that can return to normal once the stress is removed and homeostasis is returned.
Irreversible cellular injury
Cellular response and change in response to stress that cannot return to normal. Typically, membrane functions are irrevocably lost.
Types of irreversible cell injury
Pyknosis, karyoffhexis, karyolysis, lysis of chromatin
Pyknosis
Condensation of the chromatin
Karyorrhexis
Fragmentation of the nucleus into nuclear dust
Karyolysis
Dissolution of the nuclear structure as a result of enzymatic digestion.
Necrosis
Localized death of cells or tissues due to exogenous causes. Induces an inflammatory response.
Apoptosis
Can be due to exogenous or endogenous causes. Programmed cell death. Genetically activated and controlled within the cell.
