Cell functions Flashcards
Whats the function of the cell surface membrane?
Controls what goes in and out of the cell
Whats the function of cytoplasm?
Where chemical reactions take place
Whats the function of the nucleus?
Contains genetic info. DNA controls metabolic activities in the cell
Whats the function of the nucleolus?
Area within nucleus responsible for producing ribosomes. Composed of proteins + RNA
Whats the function of the nuclear envelope?
Contains nuclear pores that allow molecules to move in + out of the nucleus
Whats the function of mitochondria?
Stores energy for use in respiration. Has a double membrane - inner membrane folded to form cristae
Whats the function of vesicles?
Used to transport materials into the cell. Are membranous sacs
Whats the function of lysosomes?
Breaks down waste materials in cells
Whats the function of smooth endoplasmic reticulum? (SER)
Responsible for lipid + carbohydrate synthesis
Whats the function of rough endoplasmic reticulum? (RER)
Has ribosomes bound to surface. Responsible for synthesis + transportation of proteins
Whats the function of ribosomes?
Where protein synthesis takes place. Made of RNA molecules
Whats the function of golgi apparatus?
Modifies proteins and packs them into vesicles. Compact structure formed of cisternae
Whats the function of the cell wall?
Supports + strengthens the cell. Also acts as defence mechanism from pathogens
Whats the function of the vacuole?
Large membrane lined sac that contains sap
Whats the function of chloroplasts?
Organelles responsible for photosynthesis. Found in leaves + stems but not roots
