Cell division part 2 Flashcards
Chromosomes definition…
Chromosomes carry genetic material in the form of DNA
What does a DNA exist as?
A DNA exists as a double helix structure
Gene definition…
Section or sequence of DNA that codes for a protein or functional RNA
eg- eye colour
Allelle definition…
Alternate form of a gene
eg-brown or black
What are the two parts of the Cell Cycle and What does the cell cycle do?
DNA replication and Mitosis
The Cell Cycle makes new cells for growth, development and repair
What happens in the DNA Replication part of The Cell Cycle?
Before it divides the cell has to grow and increase the amount of sub cellular structures.
It then duplicates its DNA - so there is one copy for each new cell.
The DNA is copied and forms X shaped chromosomes
What happens in the Mitosis part of The Cell Cycle?
The chromosomes line up at the centre of the cell and the cell fibres pull them apart. So the two arms of the X go to opposite ends of the cell.
Membranes form around each of the sets of chromosomes. They become the nuclei of each new cell. The nucleus has divided
Lastly the cytoplasm and cell membrane divide
The cell new produces two new daughter cells. Which are both identical to the parent
what are the stages in the cell cycle?
interphase prophase metaphase anaphase telophase cytokinesis
what are the stages in mitosis
