30
Q

Describe the 240B machine gun.

A

The M240B is a general-purpose machine gun. It can be mounted on a bipod, tripod, aircraft, or vehicle. The M240B is a belt-fed, air-cooled, gas-operated, fully automatic machine gun that fires from the open bolt position. Ammunition is fed into the weapon from a 100-round bandoleer containing a disintegrating metallic split-link belt. M240B and barrels can be changed quickly as the weapon has a fixed head space. However, barrels from different weapons should not be interchanged. The bore of the barrel is chromium plated, reducing barrel wear to a minimum.

31
Q

Discuss the procedures for ensuring that the 240B machine gun is cleared

A

The gunner places the safety on “F.”
With his palm facing up, he pulls the cocking handle to the rear. This puts the bolt assembly in the rear position.
When the bolt is held to the rear by the sear, he manually returns the cocking handle to the forward position, places the safety on “S.”
He raises the cover assembly and ensures that the feed tray, receiver assembly, and chamber are clear.
He lowers the feed tray, places the safety on “F,” and pulls the cocking handle to the rear.
While maintaining rearward pressure, he pulls the trigger and eases the bolt assembly forward.

32
Q

Discuss the unloading procedure for the 240B machine gun.

A

The gunner unloads the M240B by pulling and locking the bolt to the rear position, if it is not already there.
He manually returns the cocking handle to its forward position.
He places the safety on “S.”
He raises the cover assembly and removes any ammunition or links from the feed tray.
He performs the four-point safety check.

33
Q

Discuss the loading procedure for the 240B machine gun.

A

The gunner makes sure the weapon is cleared.
He places the first round of the belt in the feed tray groove, double link leading, with open side of links face down.
He holds the belt about six rounds from the loading end, while closing the cover assembly.
Ensure that the round remains in the feed tray groove, and close the cover assembly.

34
Q

State the rates of fire for the 240B machine gun.

A

Maximum Range 3725 meters
Maximum Effective Range Area 1100 meter (tripod)

36
Q

Define “Grazing Fire”

A

The center of the cone of fire does not rise above 1 meter. The entire cone of fire does not rise more than 1.8 meters.

37
Q

Define “FPL”

A

Final Protective Line: An FPL is a predetermined line along which grazing fire is placed to stop an enemy assault. If an FPL is assigned, the machine gun is sighted along it except when other targets are being engaged. An FPL becomes the machine gun’s part of the unit’s final protective fires. An FPL is fixed in direction and elevation; however, a small shift for search must be employed to prevent the enemy from crawling under the FPL and to compensate for irregularities in the terrain or the sinking of the tripod legs into soft soil during firing. Fire must be delivered during all conditions of visibility.

38
Q

Define “PDF”

A

Principal Direction of Fire: A PDF is a direction of fire assigned priority to cover an area that has good fields of fire or has a likely dismounted avenue of approach. It also provides mutual support to an adjacent unit. Machine guns are sighted using the PDF if an FPL has not been assigned. If a PDF is assigned and other targets are not being engaged, machine guns remain on the PDF. A PDF has the following characteristics.
(1) It is used only if an FPL is not assigned; it then becomes the machine gun’s part of the unit’s final protective fires.
(2) When the target has width, direction is determined by aiming on one edge of the target area and noting the amount of traverse necessary to cover the entire target.
(3) The gunner is responsible for the entire wedge-shaped area from the muzzle of the weapon to the target, but elevation may be fixed for a priority portion of the target.

39
Q

Describe the safety on the 240B machine gun.

A

The safety mechanism is located on the pistol grip just behind the trigger well. When the safety is pushed to the right, the letter “S” is visible indicating the weapon is on safe. When pushed to the left, the letter “F” is visible on the safety indicating the weapon is on fire. The safety can only be engaged when the bolt is in the rear position. On the “S” position, the bolt cannot be released to go forward.

40

A

The MK 19 Machine Gun is air cooled, blowback operated (with advanced primer ignition), belt fed, and can mount on the ground or on a vehicle.

45
Q

Describe the proper employment of a machine gun.

A

To be most effective, a machine gun should be employed from a tripod mount on the ground, using a traversing and elevating (T&E) mechanism. While a machine gun may be employed from a vehicle mount while on the move, this lessens the accuracy of fire and generally decreases the survivability of the vehicle and personnel. They are most effectively employed in concert with other weapons in an attempt to achieve a synergistic effect where the fires of one weapon compliment or augment the fires of another.

46
Q

State the rates of fire for the MK19 machine gun.

A

Sustained 40 rounds per minute
Rapid 60 rounds per minute
Cyclic 325 to 375 rounds per

47
Q

What is the maximum range, maximum effective ranges, and arming range of the MK19 machine gun?

A

Maximum Range 2212 meters
Maximum Effective Range Area 2212 meters
Point 1500 meters
Arming Range 18 – 30 meters

48
Q

Describe the safety on the MK19 machine gun.

A

Thumb safety: Activates the safety slide inside the sear assembly. The safety slide blocks the sear from being depressed by the operator as long as the safety is on ‘S’ (SAFE).
Charger handle assemblies down: The safety slide on the inside edge of each charger arm slides rearward as the handle assembly is rotated down. With a handle assembly down, the bolt sear cannot come in contact with the forward end of the receiver to release the firing pin, so firing cannot occur. One or both handle assemblies may be lowered. Remember “CHARGER HANDLE ASSEMBLY DOWN” is the action for a runaway gun.

49
Q

What are the different ammunition types that can be use with the MK19 machine gun?

Specified targets numbered in sequence with their direction in mils, elevation in mils, and range in meters.

64
Q

Discuss the purpose of a range card.

A

A range card is a rough sketch or drawing which serves as both a record of firing data and a document for defensive fire planning. One copy remains at the gun position as a record of firing data. The gunner uses the card to recall the data to fire on predetermined targets and as an aid in estimating ranges to other targets during good visibility. The other copy is sent to the next higher headquarters (usually the company), who use it to organize the defense and prepare a fire plan sketch.

65
Q

Discuss the integration of the weapons systems into an overall defensive fire plan.

A

Machine guns have capabilities and limitations just as any weapon system does. Machine guns though powerful weapons do not stand alone. They are most effectively employed in concert with other weapons in an attempt to achieve a synergistic effect where the fires of one weapon compliment or augment the fires of another. The capabilities and limitations of every available weapon must be considered in order to achieve this in a tactical plan.

69
Q

Describe the classes of fire with respect to the ground.

A

Grazing Fire Fire approximately parallel to the ground where the center of the cone of fire does not rise above 1 meter. When firing over level or uniformly sloping terrain, the maximum extent of grazing fire obtainable for the M240B is approximately 600 meters. The maximum extent of grazing fire obtainable for the M2 .50 cal is approximately 700 meters.
Plunging Fire Fire in which the angle of fall of the rounds, with reference to the slope of the ground, is such that the danger space is practically confined to the beaten zone and the length of the beaten zone is materially shortened.

69
Q

Describe the classes of fire with respect to the gun.

A

Fixed Fire Fire delivered on a point target. Little or no manipulation is required. After the initial burst the gunner will follow any change or movement of the target without command.
Traversing Fire Fire distributed against a wide target requiring successive changes in the direction (left and right) of the gun.
Searching Fire Fire distributed in depth by successive changes in the elevation of the gun.
Traversing and Searching Fire Fire delivered both in width and depth by changes in direction and elevation.
