CB4b Darwin's Theory Flashcards
Describe how one characteristic of African elephants has evolved
An African elephant has large ears
Darwin’s Theory: Genetic Variation
Differences between organisms caused by differences in the alleles they inherit from their parents, or differences in genes caused by mutation
Darwin’s Theory: Evironmental change
Conditions in an area change. For example, the lack of resource (like food) causes more competition between organisms
Darwin’s Theory: Competition
When organisms need the same resource as eachother, they struggle against eachother to get those resources
Darwin’s Theory: Natural Selection
By chance, the variations of some individuals make them better at coping with change than others and more likely to survive. (Survival of the fittest)
Darwin’s Theory: Inheritance
The suvivors breed and pass on their varations to their offspring. The next generation contains more individuals with better adapted variations
Darwin’s Theory: Evolution
If the environmental conditions remain changed, natural selection occurs repeatedly and new species evolve with all having better adapted variations
Woolly mammoths and elephants evolved from the same animal; they share a…
common ancestor
Resistant
Unaffected or or less affected by something
Explain how antibiotic resistance in bacteria provides evidence to support Darwin’s theory?
Antibiotic resistance supports Darwin’s theory because after a change in environment (antibiotics), some bacteria were more resistant to the change than others. Only these bacterium survived the new conditions and were able to pass on their variations to their offspring.
