CB2a Mitosis Flashcards
State two reasons why mitosis needs to take place in cells
- To replace dead/damaged cells
- To repair worn out tissue
Interphase (First phase)
The DNA in the cell is copied (containing a chromosome and its copy). Sub-cellular parts are also copied
Prophase
The membrane around the nucleus breaks down
Metaphase
The chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
Anaphase
Each of the chromosome X-shapes splits to form two chromotids (two single chromosomes). They pull apart from eachother
Telophase
The single chromosomes arrive at the opposite ends of the cell. The membranes around the nucleus begin to form again
Cytokenesis
The cytoplasm of the cell is separated as a cell membrane divides the cell into two daughter cells
How many daughter cells are produced after mitosis
2
Asexual reproduction
Producing new organisms from one parent only. These organisms are genetically identical to the parent
Why is DNA replication important in interphase?
It is important because it means two daughter cells can be produced
Uncontrollable cell divison leads to…
Cancer
Rapid cell division can produce growing lumps of cells called…
tumours that damage the body and result in death
