caveolae Flashcards
what is a caveolin
a self-assembling, integral membrane protein family with a high affinity for binding cholesterol.
what are caveoli
cholesterol and glycolipid rich regions, a specialized subset of plasma membrane asociated lipid rafts
what can be concentrated in caveolae? what functions does this suggest?g
gpi anchored plasma membrane proteins, which include many membrane receptors and signaling molecules, can be concentrated in caveolae, suggesting functions in signal transduction.
what caveolae form?
endocytic vesicles by budding from the PM (also using dynamin to pinch off)
what roles are indicated for the caveolae pathway?
transcytosis and delivery to an endosomal type of compartment
what does retrograde transport to the ER represent?
one pathway from which endocytosed molecules could be reverse transported into the cytosol through the translocon.
What viruses use caveoli? how?
SV40 and papilloma virus use caveoli to enter cells and from there make their way to the ER through specialized endosomes.
where are cavewolae prominent?
endothelial cells
what kind of texture does cytosoolic face of caveolae membrane have?
cauliflower, which is thought to result from aggregates of caveolin in the membrane
