causes of flooding Flashcards
Five physical reasons that causes flooding
- Steep land
- Impermeable rock
- Heavy rain
- Saturated ground
- Melted snow
Name three human causes of flooding
- deforestation
- Channelisation
- Urbanisation
how does steep land cause flooding?
Water will roll down the steep slope and Gather at the bottom
How does impermeable rock cause flooding?
Water will sit at the top and roll across the landscape because they can’t get through them
How does saturated ground cause flooding?
So you can’t take any more water so it sits on top and starts to move across the surface
How does deforestation cause flooding?
when rainforest the tree intercepts the water which slows it getting to the river, when trees aren’t there, there’s nothing to slow the flow of water
How does channelisation cause flooding?
it speeds the water up and move it quickly from a specific area so that the area doesn’t flood. This makes it flood further upstream as the water increases by speed.
How does urbanisation cause flooding?
building path and roots are in permanent surfaces and drainage systems
Drain take water into the river quicker
