What were the events leading to the 18th May, 1980 eruption?

A

Juan de Fuca plate (oceanic) moved east and was subducted under the North American plate (continental). This lead to a magnitude 5.0 earthquake which caused the North face of the volcano to collapse.
The volcano then erupted ash, producing pyroclastic flows. (hot gas and ash)
400m was blown off the top of the mountain, leaving a 500m deep crater.

A

Every plant+animal 25km north of the volcano was killed.
Ice on top of the volcano melted, creating mudflows, choking rivers and killing fish. e.g. Spirit lake was filled with mud.
