Carnap - Metaphysics and Physical language Flashcards
Demarcation of science: Logical positivism
Pseudo-statement
A sequence of words that appears to convey meaning but actually does not; it lacks coherent significance
Logical analysis
The process of examining arguments or statements to determine their validity or soundness based on the rules of logic
Verifiable
Capable of being tested or confirmed through observation or evidence
Pseudo-concept
If it only seems to have a meaning while it really does not. (empty speech)
Metaphysics as art
The metaphysicist has not assessed right from wrong, but only expressed something (like art not science)
System Language
This is the language used to formulate scientific theories, hypotheses, and general statements about the world. It encompasses the language of science and formal systems of knowledge
Protocol Language
This refers to the language or set of statements that directly describe observations, experiences, or “the immediately given” within the context of an individual’s subjective experience. It’s the language a person uses to describe what they directly perceive or experience
Physicalism
The physical language is universal and inter-subiective. (Language of science)
Phenomenology
Claims to be able to establish universal synthetic sentences which have not been obtained through induction
Statements about Other Minds
The concept of “other minds” involves making testable assertions about the mental states of individuals while distinguishing them from empirical statements about physical properties, with the rejection of empirical evidence potentially rendering such assertions as metaphysical pseudo-sentences
