What did Jung notice in his mother early on? (2)
-part 1: kind, classic motherly type

What was the most basic disagreement between Jung and Freud?
-that Freud uses the terms libido (which was a very socially scary word at the time) and has more of a negative view of people, thats why Jung is sometimes seen as the father of positive psychology
What did Jung say about spirituality?
-you cannot be a fully formed person without spirituality
What years were the dark period for Jung and why was it called this? (2)
-1914-1917
-mentally sick, psychologically struggling and comes up with theories after this
What did Jung call the psyche?
-the total personality
What is the total personality energized by?
-the libido, which is the biological force or energy
Where does the libido come from?
-the principle of opposites, every psychic component has an opposite
What are the three levels of the psyche? (3)
-conscious (ego)
-personal unconscious
-collective unconscious
What is the ego? What does it include? (2)
-centre of consciousness
-includes the thoughts, memories, and perceptions of which we are aware
What is the personal unconscious? What is broken into? (2)
-contains memories, experiences, and emotions that have been repressed or forgotten but can still influence behavior.

What are complexes?
-clusters of emotions, thoughts, memories, and perceptions that are organized around a common theme
What is Freud’s equivalent to a personal unconscious
-preconscious and unconscious put together
What is the collective unconscious?
-it is universal across cultures and is ancestral experiences biologically in us, including pre human memory
What does the collective unconscious contain?
-archetypes
What are archetypes? Where are representations of archetypes found? (2)
-an inherited predisposition to respond in a certain way and is common to all human beings (unlike complexes)
-found in art, literature and religion
What are the 5 common archetypes? (5)
-persona
-anima
-animus
-shadow
-self
Describe the persona.
-mask you put on to go into public, your public self
Describe the anima?
-feminine part of male psyche, allows men to have feminine traits
Describe the animus?
-the male part of the female psyche
Describe the shadow.
-very similar to the id, manifests itself in aggression, eroticism, and even self-destruction
What is the self considered?
-the centre of personality, or the whole of personality
What is the goal for people?
-to become the self as this unites and harmonizes other archetypes
What does personal growth move towards?
-self realization
What is self realization? What does it require? Is it destiny? (3)
-the achievement of a unified self, an integrated whole person
-balance between all components of the psyche

-identifying your different parts, the opposing aspects of yourself

-bringing the different part of yourself together for balance

-overcomes evil in some way, rescues, self-sacrifices and always has a critical flaw

-has key wisdom needed to live life

-positive and negative characteristics, fertility and nourishment but also power

-small being or child with extraordinary powers
What is the magician/trickster archetype?
-creative, cunning and manipulative
