Caries Classification Flashcards
Class I
affects pits & fissures on occlusal third and two thirds of molars and premolars, and lingual part of anterior teeth
Class II
affects proximal surfaces of molars and premolars
Class III
affects proximal surfaces of anterior teeth w/o involving the incisal angles
Class IV
affects proximal including incisal angles of anterior teeth
Class V
affects gingival 1/3 of facial or lingual surfaces of anterior or posterior teeth
Class VI
affects cusp tips of molars, premolars, and cuspids
major limitation fo Black’s CCS
doesnt include non-cavitated lesion or severity of lesion
ADA CCS includes what categories
tooth #, lesion location, site of origin, severity, lesion activity
4 levels of severity
sound surface
initial mineral loss
moderate mineral loss
advanced mineral loss
-noncavitated and, with remineralization, are REVERSIBLE
-limited to enamel or cementum or very outermost layer of dentin
-sometimes only detectable after drying
initial mineral loss
-some possibility of enamel surface microcavitation, and /or dentin shadowing visible through enamel
-likelihood of dentin involvement
moderate mineral loss
-full cavitation through enamel and dentin is clinically exposed
advanced caries lesion
International Caries Detection & Assessment System
0 - no evidence of caries
1 - initial caries (opacity white/brown after air drying)
2 - distinct visual change in enamel (opacity white/brown seen on wet surface)
3 - localized enamel breakdown due to caries w no visible dentin
4 - underlying dark shadow from dentin
5 - distinct cavity w visible dentin
6 - extensive distinct cavity w visible dentin
Histological Gold Standard Codes
0 - no demineralization
1 - demin in external 1/2 of enamel
2 - demin in inner 1/2 of enamel and external 1/3 of dentin
3 - demin in middle 1/3 of dentin
4 - demin in inner 1/3 of dentin
