Labor Market
Involves a geographic location (local, regional, state, national, international) where workers compete for paid work and employers compete for qualified workers.
workforce
The workers who make up the labor market. It includes employed individuals as well as those seeking gainful employment.
growth needs
Occur in the labor market when the demand for workers exceeds the number of existing workers and requires more workers to be added to the workforce.
replacement needs
Occur in the labor market when workers are needed to replace those who have left the workforce due to retirement, returning to school, assuming household and child-raising duties, or choosing not to work
Occupational Information
Facts about a position, job task, career field, or industry used to assist clients in making decisions regarding future employment. Occupational information commonly includes, but is not limited to, duties and nature of work, work settings and conditions, education and training, methods of entry, salary and benefits, advancement opportunities, and employment outlook
standard occupation classification system
The classification system used by the O*NET to classify occupations; uses a six-digit code to classify occupations into four levels: major group, minor group, broad occupation, and detailed occupation
computer-assisted career guidance (CACG) systems
Computer-based systems that provide vocational assessments, occupational and educational information, and career planning tools. Commonly used CACG systems include DISCOVER, SIGI PLUS, Choices, and Guidance Information Service.
informational interviewing
An informal method of obtaining occupational information that provides one the opportunity to interview people who are currently employed in a career field of interest. Informational interviews, unlike job interviews, assist persons in exploring career options.
job shadowing
A temporary, unpaid experience in which one observes a competent worker and/or work environment to learn more about a career
Career Counseling
The process by which professional counselors facilitate an individual’s development of a life career; specifically, counselors focus on assisting clients with defining their role as a worker and understanding how that role interacts with their other life roles.
Career Intervention
A counseling intervention specifically meant to facilitate clients’ career development processes and the attainment of their counseling goals. Career counseling interventions can be implemented in an individual or group session.
program goals
: Broad statements that indicate how the career intervention program will respond to population’s needs.
program objectives
Specific, measurable, action-oriented steps that must be attained to accomplish a particular program goal
