Cardiovascular system Flashcards
1
Q
The circulatory system
A
2
Q
blood vessels
A
- arteries = carry blood away from the heart
- veins = return blood to the heart
- capillaries = link arteries and veins
- only one cell thick to allow the exchange of nutrient, gases & waste between blood & body tissues
3
Q
blood vessels (part 2)
A
Extensive network transport blood:
- lungs (pulmonary circulation), O2 taken into lungs from air & same time carbon dioxide = extracted from lungs into the air
4
Q
Heart
A
- muscular sac
- four chambers
- pumps heart around the body
- maintains blood pressure
- heart muscles (myocardium)
- when resting heartbeat = 65 &75 per min
- HR increase = when increased o2 e.g. exercise.
5
Q
circulation of blood through the heart and pulmonary and systemic circulations
A
6
Q
Lymphatic system
A
- series of lymph vessels
- start = blind-ended tubes in the tissue between blood capillaries and tissue cells
- similar to veins & blood capillaries
- pores in walls of lymph capillaries than blood capillaries
- lymph = drained materials - plasma protein, bacteria or cells
- transported along lymph vessels returning to the bloodstream near to the heart.
- formation and maturation of lymphocytes, the white blood cells = immunity.
