- dissolved substance = nutrient absorbed from the alimentary canal, o2 absorbed from lungs
- waste materials from blood eliminated by excretion

- Erythrocytes (red blood cells) = transport o2 & carbon dioxide from lung to body cells
- Leukocytes (white blood cells) = defence against infection & foreign substances
- Platelets (thrombocytes) cell fragments = essential in blood clotting
