Cardiovascular homeostatic imalances Flashcards
Athertosclerosis
-Hardening and blockage of arteries due to a build up of plaques
-Overtime, plaques can block arteries through the body which increases BP (hypertension) and casue tunica media and tunica intima to not be able to change shape
Coronary Artery disease (CAD)
-form of atherosclerosis that involves narrowing and hardening of coronary arteries
-leads to decreased/stopped blood flow which will injur cardiac tissue
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)
-Form of atherosclerosis that involves narrowing and hardening of arteries that supply arms and feet
-leads to decrease local blood flow that can damage nerves and other tissues
Deep vein thromosis (DVT)
-Form of blood clot in a deep vein
-very common in leg veins and pelvic deep veins
-will impeded local blood flow which damages vessel walls and increases the risk of pulmonary embolism (clot goes in lungsz0
Ventricular (Patholgical) hypertrophy
-enlargement of ventricular mass by actually shrinking ventricles inward
-happens in response to stress or disease
-reduces stroke volume and the heart has to work way harder to maintain Q at rest
where is Ventricular (Patholgical) hypertrophy most common?
The LEFT ventricle
What happens to Heart rate in someone who has Ventricular (Patholgical) hypertrophy?
Heart rate becomes elevated
Cardiac Dysrythmia
-abnormal electrical activity of the heart
-can be to fast or too slow
-some can be life-threating but not all of them are
Myocardial infarction
-blood flow to part of heart gets blocked and part of the heart tissue gets damaged or dies
lack of 02=
ischemia
