Introduction and Blood Flashcards
What are the TWO main purposes of the cardiovasuculaer system?
- Delievery of O2, nutrients, hormones, etc to tissues via blood circulation
- removal of CO2, waste products, metabolic intermediates, etc from the tissues via blood circulation
What are the three main components of the cardio vascular system?
Blood, Vesssels, Heart
Main purpose of the Blood?
Serves as a medium for delivery
Main purpose of the heart?
the pump for blood (keeps blood moving!!)
Main purpose of vessels?
pathway for the blood (like the pipes in a house)
Blood is a specialized __________.
*hint: tissue
Blood is a specialized connective tissue
what are the 5 main functions of blodd?
1.Transport nutrients, hormones, O2, C02, and waste products within body
2.Regulation of pH and ions within the body
3.less fluid losses at injury site
4.defense against toxins and pathogens
5.Stabilizes body temp
Is blood slightly acidic or slightly basic?
It is slightly basic with a pH of 7.35-7.45
What is the adverage temperature of blood?
100 F
What is plasma made of?
How much does it make up of the blood in the body?
its a fluid consisiting of water, dissolved plasma proteins, and other solutes.
Plasma makes up 50-60% of blood
What are the three formed elements?
Red Blood cells, White blood cells, and platelets
What does this formed element do?
Red blood cells
Transport O2 & CO2 on hemoglobin
What on RBCs determines a persons blood type?
Surface antigens
What does this formed element do?
White blood cells
(Leukolytes) part of the immune system
How are red blood cells and white blood cells different structurally?
RBCs do not have a nucleus or ribosomes and CAN NOT divide and they die very fast
While WBCs do have a nucleus and ribiosomes and mitochondria, so they can repair themselves but can’t divide!!
WE HAVE WAY MORE RBCs THAN WBCs
