Heart Structure Flashcards
What are the two main purposes of the heart?
1)pump for blood
2)connects with vessles to distribute blood in body
Where does the heart sit?
between two plural cavities in the mediastinum
what are the four main layers of cardiac tissue?
Pericardium
epicardium
myocardium
endocardium
Pericardium
-the covering for the heart
-sac-like structure that surrunds, lubricates, and protetcs the heart and root of blood vessles
The pericardium has two layers. What are they and which layer are they?
1.Parietal pericardium: outer layer
2.Visceral Pericardium: inner layer
Epicardium
outer layer of cardiac tissue responsible for making pericardial fluid
Myocardium
-which layer is it?
4 points
-middle layer
1.primary muscle tissue of heart
2.contain myocytes (short, branched, single-nucleus cells)
3.myocytes utilize gap junctions to propohate electric signals for cardiac contraction
4.Myocytes are involuntary and automatically controled
Endocardium
Which layer is it?
3 main points
inner layer
1.made of epitheal cells to create a smooth lining inside chambers of heart
2.creates an ionic barrier between heart and cardiac tissue
3.Helps with FRICTION!!
