Cardiovascular Devices part III Flashcards
Remember the cardiograph of heart pulses
Start with P (atrial contraction from SA node-AV node), QRS (Ventrical contraction), T (ventrical relaxation)
What is fibrillation
A quivering or irregular rapid heartbeat
What is AF (Atrial fibrillation)
Happens at the upper chambers experience chaotic heart beat
What is VF (Ventricular fibrillation)
Happens at the lower chambers
Is AF or VF more dangerous
VF is more dangerous
What does AED stand for
Automated external defibrillator
What is artificial pacemaker
A small device designed to regulate abnormal heart rhythm (like SA node) using low-energy electrical impulses.
What is the first FDA approved leadless and smallest pacemaker
Single-chamber Micra by Medtronic in 2016
What are the 3 major components of artificial pacemaker
- Generator with battery
- Lead with electrode
- Programmer
How to implant the regular artificial pacemaker
It is implanted under the chest or abdomen, and less invasive than bypass
What are some precautions when using pacemaker
- Battery life
- Airport security scanner: quite safe
- MRI: possible magnetic interference and heating
- Daily exercise: ask doctor but generally safe
