CARDIOVASCULAR CASE STUDY 2 Flashcards
1
Q
What is the mechanism of action of furosemide?
A
Blocks Na-k-2Cl pump in the ascending limb of the Loop of Henle, which increases water and electrolyte excretion.
2
Q
Which electrolyte abnormalities can be caused by furosemide?
A
Hypokalaemia, hypomagnesaemia, metabolic alkalosis due to increased H+ excretion.
3
Q
Thiazide diuretics can also be used to treat heart failure. What is their mechanism of action?
A
Inhibits active reabsorption of NaCl in the distal convoluted tubule by blocking the Na+/Cl- symporter.
4
Q
What electrolyte abnormalities are common with thiazide diuretics?
A
Hypokalaemia, hyponatraemia, hypochloraemia
