Cardiorespiratory Concepts Flashcards
What is the cardiorespiratory system?
it’s the combination of the cardiovascular system (heart and blood vessels) and the respiratory system (lungs and air passageways)
What does the cardiorespiratory system do?
delivers oxygen and nutrients as well as removes waste from the body’s tissues
What is the cardiovascular system?
heart and network of arteries and veins that carry blood throughout the body.
blood transports nutrients, oxygen, carbon dioxide, metabolic waste products, and key chemical messengers (hormones)
What is the respiratory system?
the lungs and network or air passageways that diffuse oxygen into the blood to circulate the body while removing waste like carbon dioxide
How is blood pressure defined?
the result of blood being pumped out of the ventricles and exerting force against the arterial walls
What is cardiac output?
the amount of blood ejected by the heart in one minute.
influenced by heart rate and stroke volume
What is average blood pressure?
120/80
What is systolic pressure?
the pressure exerted on the walls of the arteries as the heart contracts - representing peak pressure
the top number of blood pressure
What is diastolic pressure?
the pressure exerted on the walls of the arteries as the heart relaxes and fills again
the bottom number of blood pressure
How is aerobic capacity measured?
by the amount of oxygen that can be delivered to the muscle cell compared with the amount of oxygen used by the muscle cell to make energy for muscle contraction.
What does FITT stand for?
Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type
What is cardiorespiratory capacity?
the maximum amount of oxygen the body can extract and use in the process of energy production
aka VO2 max
How to determine HR max?
220-age
Exercise frequency range
1-5 sessions per week
Exercise intensity range
55-90% of HR max
