  • chronic bronchitis (inflammation of airways)
  • emphysema (destruction of alveoli)
  • damage to epithelial lining=damage to cilia=affects mucocilary clearance
  • increased sputum production
  • destruction of alveoli walls=reduced surface area
  • body forces air through airways due to irritation= persistent cough
  • wheezing/SOB
  • crackles if secretion retention is present
