- chronic bronchitis (inflammation of airways)
- emphysema (destruction of alveoli)
- damage to epithelial lining=damage to cilia=affects mucocilary clearance
- increased sputum production
- destruction of alveoli walls=reduced surface area
- body forces air through airways due to irritation= persistent cough
- wheezing/SOB
- crackles if secretion retention is present
