Cardiology (Pt. 1) Flashcards
Cardiovascular System
Consists of the heart and blood vessels.
Heart
Composed of cardiac muscle tissue, constracts to push blood through the blood vessels to transport substances such as oxygen, nutrients, and waste products to all areas of the body.
What are the three types of blood vessels?
Artieries, veins, and capillaries.
What is the direction of blood flow?
Blood is carried from the heart by arteries, and then it enters capillary beds. Blood is, then, carried back to heart through veins.
Capillaries
The narrowest blood vessels and the location to which oxygen and nutrients are delivered and waste are picked up.
Cardiology
The diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions affecting the cardiovascular system.
Cardiologists
Responsible for treating conditions such as coronary heart disease, cardiac arrhythmia, hypertension, heart valve disease, cogenital heart defects, etc.
Cardiovascular Technologists
Allied health professionals who work alongside the cardiologist. These technologists perform a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including electrocardiography, echocardiography, exercise stress testing, and cardiac catheterization.
