Cardio system disorders Flashcards
what is arteriosclerosis (ART)
general term for all types of arterial changes
what is atherosclerosis (ATH)
presence of atheroma, can be caused by damage to the endothelium by an irritant
how do you find total cholesterol levels
total cholesterol divided by the HDL (good cholesterol)
what is myocardial ischemia (MI)
when coronary arteries are unable to supply blood to meet the metabolic demands of the heart
what is stable angina
partially blocked coronary artery that is beating at rest (can meet demands)
what is unstable angina
plaque material being prone to clotting on the ruptured plaque. can progress to MI or heart attack. can be partially blocked or completely blocked to heart muscle
what is heart attack
when atherosclerotic artery is completely blocked
what is STEMI
ST-elevated myocardial infraction; full thickness infract
what is non-STEMI
partial thickness infract or subendocardial infract because of smaller artery
what are some manifestations of MI
- abrupt pain
- GI complaints
- weakness, SOB, cold clammy skin
- tachycardia, anxiety, sense of doom
- symptoms of inflammation
what is primary hypertension
essential hypertension with a BP constantly over 140/90, overtime will cause damage to arterial walls
what is secondary hypertension
results from renal or endocrine disease or tumor of adrenal medulla
