Cardiac Valve Defects - Mitral Stenosis Flashcards
1
Q
What is Mitral Stenosis?
A
Narrow mitral valve - making it difficult for the left atrium to push blood through to the ventricle.
2
Q
Aetiology of Mitral Stenosis.
A
- Rheumatic Heart Disease.
2. Infective Endocarditis.
3
Q
CXR Finding in Mitral Stenosis.
A
Atrial Enlargement :
- Splaying of the Carina with Elevation of the Left Main Bronchus.
- Double Right Heart Border.
- Cardiomegaly.
4
Q
Nature of Murmur in Mitral Stenosis.
A
- Mid/Late-Diastolic.
- Low-Pitched.
- Rumbling.
- Loud S1 (Thick Valve) and Palpate a Tapping Apex & Opening Snap.
- Low Volume Pulse.
5
Q
Associations of Mitral Stenosis (2).
A
- Malar Flush - Back Pressure of Blood in Pulmonary System (CO2 - Vasodilation).
- Atrial Fibrillation - strain, electrical disruption due to struggle of blood.
6
Q
Features of Severe Mitral Stenosis (2).
A
- The length of the murmur increases.
2. The opening snap becomes closer to S2.
7
Q
Management of Mitral Stenosis.
A
- AF - Anticoagulation : Warfarin.
- Asymptomatic - Monitoring with Regular Echocardiograms.
- Symptomatic - Percutaneous Mitral Balloon Valvotomy or Mitral Valve Surgery.
8
Q
Complications of Mitral Stenosis (3).
A
- AF & VTE.
- Pulmonary HTN.
- Dilated Left Atrium.
