Cardiac Basics Flashcards
Where is the heart located?
Between the 2nd & 6th Ribs & Behind the Sternum
What is Atrial Kick?
The Action of the Atrium Contributing to the Output of Blood
Describe the function of the ventricles
The ventricles are the hearts main pumping chambers
What causes the 1st heart sound, S1?
The closure of the atrioventricular (AV) valves
What causes the 2nd heart sound, S2?
The closure of the Semilunar Valves
What happens if a heart valve does not close tightly?
There is backflow of blood
Called Insufficiency or Regurgitation
Which side of the heart is thicker?
The left side bc it needs to work harder to pump blood to the body
What happens in Systole?
The ventricles contract
The semilunar valves open
The AV valves close
What is Cardiac Output?
The amount of blood pumped out of the heart in one minute
What happens if CO is compromised?
Decrease of oxygen delivery to the tissues
What happens to CO if the HR is too slow?
There is not enough stimulation to pump enough blood out.
What happens to CO if HR is too fast?
There is not enough time for the ventricles to fill between heart beats
What is Stroke Volume?
The amount of blood pumped out of the heart with each heart beat
What 3 factors determine Stroke Volume?
- Preload
- Afterload
- Contractility
