Angina/Myocardial Infarction Flashcards
What is the most important thing to do in early recognition MI?
Early recognition and seeking treatment to prevent death
What is angina pectoris an “impending” sign for?
Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI)
How is angina characterized? (Clinical Manifestations)?
Blood flow is compromised & ischemia causes chest pain. Described as: Tight squeezing Heavy pressure Constricting feeling in chest Pain can radiate to jaw, neck or arm
What is stable angina?
Occurs with exercise or emotional stress & is relieved by rest or Nitroglycerin
What is unstable angina?
Occurs with exercise or emotional stress, but increases in occurrence, severity & duration.
What is variant angina?
Due to coronary artery spasm, often occurs during rest.
How do I know I’m having an MI & not angina?
- Pain is unrelieved by rest
- Pain unrelieved by nitroglycerin
- Pain lasting for more than 15 minutes
What is released after ischemic injury to the cardiac muscle?
Cardiac enzymes released into blood stream providing specific markers of an MI
Angina is precipitated by…?
Exertion or stress
MI is precipitated by…?
Can occur without cause, often in the morning after rest
Angina can be relieved by…?
Rest or Nitroglycerin
MI can be relieved by…?
Only by opioids
How long do symptoms last in an anginal attack?
Less than 15 minutes
How long do symptoms last in an AMI?
More than 15-30 minutes
What are some S/S r/t MI that you will not find in an anginal attack?
- Nausea
- Epigastric distress
- dyspnea
- Anxiety
- Diaphoresis
