CAP 13 PRECIPITATION Flashcards
BERGERON FINDEISEN ?(ICE CRYSTALLS)
ICE CRYSTALS GROW AT THE EXPENSE OF LIQUID DROPLETS.FORMS IN CLOUDS COLDER THAN 0 DEGREES CONTAINING ICE CRYSTALS AND SUPERCOOLED WATER DROPLETS.
BASICALLY WATER VAPOUR SUBLIMATES ONTO ICE CRYSTALS AND SCWD WILL ALSO FREEZE ON COLLISION WITH ICE CRYSTALLS
COALESCENCE THEORY
Water droplets becomes larger with the collision with other droplets.it occurs in clouds warmer than 0c
Drizzle (DZ)
Diameter less than 0.5mm
Falls from stratus
Rain (RA)
From 0.5mm to 5.5mm in diameter
Rain possible from any cloud except stratus and cirrus clouds type
Snow (SN)
Ice crystals falling from temp warmer than -5 .generally they stick together.mostle falls from any cloud
Snow grains (SG)
Small opaque white particles of ice
Diameter less than 1mm
Falls mostly stratus or fog and never in the form of shower
Snow pellets ( soft hail )
White and opaque ice particles .
Diameter may be large as 5 mm
Fall from cumulus or cumulunimbus
Hail(GR)
Can be transparent or opaque
Diameter from 5-50 mm
Generally in CBs
Small hail (GS)
Translucent ice particles
Diameter around 5mm
Is an intermediate stage between snow pallet and hailstone
Occur in cumulunimbus
Ice pellets (PL)
Transparent ice particles
Diameter less than 5mm
Falls from nimbostratus or altostrartus
Usully the fall into a subcloud layer of warm air where it melts, then fall into a cold air below 0c where it freeze.
Rain is falling from a layer (below 0c)then it goes through a layer of temp ( above 0C) usually thick 5000/10000ft from ground, then it goes through a layer og cold temp below 0c which freeze to ice pellelts .if there is not this last layer (ore not thick enough) ice rain is formed instead.
Diamond dust/ice Crystals (IC)
Precipitation from a clear sky in very small ice crystals.
Forms in temperature less than -10 (rapid cooling)
Virga ?
Ice crystals or raindrops which evaporates before reaching the ground.
Usually it brings microburst downdrafts
Signs for light,moderate,heavy?
Light»_space;> -
Moderate» nothing
Heavy» +
