Calcium Homeostasis Flashcards
What is normal blood calcium?
9-11 mg/100ml
Hypocalcemia causes what in parathyroid gland?
Chief cells of parathyroid gland to release PTH
How does bone raise blood calcium?
By increasing osteoclasts.
How does kidney raise blood calcium?
By increasing calcium absorption and decreasing phosphate absorption (increases phosphate in urine by phosphate buffer system)
What does hypercalcemia cause in thyroid gland?
Causes parafollicular cells of thyroid to release calcitonin.
How does bone lower blood calcium?
By increasing osteoblasts.
How does kidney lower blood calcium?
By decreasing calcium absorption and increasing phosphate absorption.
What hormone is released in response to hypocalcemia?
Parathyroid hormone
Where is parathyroid hormone released from?
Chief cells of parathyroid gland
How does kidney cortex raise blood calcium?
By formation of Vitamin D3/Calcitrol
What happens as a result of decreased phosphate absorption?
Phosaphte increases in the urine.
What can an excessive amount of phosphoric acid lead to?
Osteoporosis
What does calcitrol/vitamin D3 do?
Increases calcium and phosphorus absorption from the intestines.
What do you need to absorb calcium?
Vitamin D
What hormone is released in response to hypercalcemia?
Calcitonin
