Calcium - Class (2)
A
- electrolyte- positive inotropic agent
2
Q
Calcium - Actions (2)
A
- facilitates actin-myosin interaction in cardiac/smooth muscle of tunica media (middle aorta)- establishes electrical gradient to move from K+ from plasma to cell in hyper K
3
Q
Calcium - Indications (5)
A
- acute hyper K in pt’s needing hemodialysis- hypotension from Ca channel blocker toxicity- wide QRS complex rhythms in hyper K- Magnesium sulfate OD- Hypocalcemia
4
Q
Calcium - Side effects (5)
A
- may precipate/worsen dig toxicity- cardiac arrhythmias- may cause ventricular standstill in beating heart- metallic taste- may cause pain/burning at IV site

Q
Calcium - Precautions (2)
A
- monitor VS/EKG- do not mix w/ NaHCO3 without flushing line
