Cabin Irregularities, Emergency Evacuations Flashcards
5 Ways to assist us in gaining Passenger compliance
- First Opportunity-Ethical Appeal
2.Other Opportunities-Rational/Personal Appeal
3.Final Opportunity-Practical Appeal - Act
1st Opportunity-Ethical Appeal
Ask the Pax to please comply with your request-
If you use a question, make it open ended
-you can make particularly effective use of this opportunity by askin a ? That assumes compliance.
Ex: if someone will have to check their bag, you could say “ I am sorry, pour OHB are full. I will be happy to check you bag, what is your final destination?
Keep tone of voice, posture, and facial expressions positive and hospitable.
Other Opportunities
(Rational/Personal Appeal)
Other opportunities utilize Rational Appeals, personal appeals and additional strategies to gain Pax compliance. You need to decide which strategy will best address the pax concerns in order to solve the issue and gain compliance.
Why?
Provide context for your request by offering a valid explanation
What’s in it for me?
Indicate what the Pax gains by following your request
Options
Provide options that are in the best interest of the pax
Partner
Change the direction of the situation by bringing in another person
Strategically Disengage
Disengage from the pax to move from a higher spectrum of conflict to a lower one
Final Opportunity (Practical Appeal)
Ask the pax, “Is there anything I can do, within the rules, that will allow us to work this out? At this point, the pax may not be thinking logically. Using the Practical appeal gives them the opportunity to provide a solution. It’s important top listen to their response and not be dismissive of their suggestion.
Act
When the pax still won’t cooperate, remember to remain calm, professional and hospitable. Follow your procedures, which you can find in the (FA SSI, Ch 9 misconduct Ch 10 Common strategy/threat levels)
Strategic Disengagement
A proven de-escalation strategy used by law enforcement.
Removing yourself from a situation when compliance is unlikely, the situation is likely to escalate, there is not an immediate safety risk and other safety related duties take priority.
Behaviors include: tone, body language, and facial expressions, and words they use
Always Remember:
-leverage your training
-Constantly assess situations, determine risk levels, and take appropriate action
-recognize those behaviors that would indicate you should Strategically Disengage
-Strategically disengage anytime your personal safety is at risk
-Notify fellow crew members
-Complete IR
Reopening Doors
F/A must obtain verbal confirmation from the pilots prior to opening the door.
-sometimes need to be reopened, the door may be misaligned or the Ops Agent needs to communicate with F/A
Prohibited Items
-Flameless ration heaters are not permitted as carryon items or in checked baggage, except on military charter flights
-Spray startch
-Aerosol wrinkle remover
-Aerosol room deodorizers
-torch style lighters
-self defense spray
Acceptable Items
-
-Dry ice as long as it does not exceed 5.5 lbs per pax and provided the package permits the release of CO2
-Containers labeled Transplant organ, Blood, or exempt Human/Animal specimen are acceptable and must be stored under the seat in front of the pax
-non-aerosol deodorizers are allowed as long as they are under 17 ozs per container and each pax is limited to a total of 68 Fl ozs.
-helium balloons, although they may burst at altitude-cannot block any pax view of “no Smoking”, of “fasten seatbelt”, and Exit sign
Normalcy bias
Pax may not perceive the danger they- are in and could act in an inappropriate manner.
Ex: slow to respond to crew instructions, open OHB to get carry ons
Mental state people enter when facing a disaster, causes people to underestimate the possibility of disaster and possible effects.
30 second review
Task that must always be completed by every F/A prior to takeoff and landing
Flight attendants brace positions
- Reduce risk of neck or spine injury
- Reduce secondary impact
Brace Commands
Apparent danger-
Remain belted in brace position
Shout: “ HEADS DOWN, STAY DOWN!”
-continue shouting until the a/c comes to a complete stop.
Emergency Flight Deck Access
-“A” approaches the door
-Another F/A monitors the cabin
-“A” enters the emergency code and watches the status lights:
-first, an amber light illuminates
-On the Flight Deck, a horn sounds and a flashing indicator alerts the Pilots for 30 seconds
-After 30 seconds, a green light illuminated, indicating auto-unlock
-the door unlocks for 5 seconds
-Flight attendants must open the door within the 5 seconds or start the sequence over.
-If Pilots are able to respond, they will deny entry and ring the cabin with the ALETRT signal
-A red light illuminates
-the keypad locks for 15 minutes.
Prior to opening any aircraft door, regardless of normal ops or emergency, you must
Assess (conditions)
Emergency Lighting System
