C8.8 Dynamic equilibrium Flashcards
What happens at an equilibrium?
The rate of the forward reaction equals the rate of the reverse reaction
What is one example of a reversible reaction?
Nitrogen (N2) reacts with hydrogen (H2) to produce ammonia (NH3)
What is a state of dynamic equilibrium?
As the forward and reverse reactions are continuously taking place (unnoticed because they occur at the atomic level) a state of dynamic equilibrium has bene reached
What is a closed system?
In which no reactants or products can get in or out
What does Iodine monochloride + chlorine gas make?
Iodine Trichloride ICl(3)
What happens if there is plenty of chlorine gas?
Forward reaction makes trichloride crystals quickly
What happens if the concentration of chlorine gas is lowered?
Rate of forward reaction decreases and the rate of reverse reaction increases
This leads to iodine trichloride being turned back into Cl2 and ICl until equilibrium is established again
What is an application of Le Chatelier’s Principle?
You change the relative amounts of the reactants and products in a reacting mixture at equilibrium by changing the conditions
What happens if a change in equilibrium is introduced?
The position of the equilibrium shifts so as to cancel out the change
