C8.3 The effect of temperature Flashcards
What are the 2 reasons why temperatures increases the rate of a reaction?
Particles collide more often
Particles collide with more energy
How does particles colliding more frequently increase the rate of reaction
When you heat up particles - energy is transferred to the particles
The kinetic energy of the particles increases
This means they move faster
This increases the frequency of successful collisions
Therefore the rate of reaction increases
How does particles colliding with more energy increase the rate of reaction?
Particles moving around more quickly have more energy
This means collisions will be more energetic
An increased proportion of particles exceeding the activation energy has a greater effect on rate than the increased frequency of collisions
By how much does a 10 C rise in temperature increase the reaction rate at room temperature?
Doubles the rate of reaction
Why does (Alka-Seltzer tables) - Sodium hydrogencarbonate fizz in water?
Due to carbon dioxide being produced by the reaction of the tablet and the citric acid
