C13.5 Atmospheric pollutants Flashcards
What do all fossil fuels contain?
➢ Some sulfur
How is Sulfur dioxide made?
➢ When oxygen reacts with sulfur
Why is Sulfur dioxide harmful?
➢ It can cause acid rain which damages trees and can even kill animals and plants
How can sulfur impurities be removed from fuel in a coal-powered station?
➢ By reacting it with calcium hydroxide
How is carbon monoxide made?
When there is not enough oxygen inside an engine, the carbon turns into CO
Why is CO a problem?
➢ It is colourless and odourless
What happens when CO gets inside the body?
➢ Your red blood cells pick up carbon monoxide and carry it around in your blood instead of oxygen
What will a victim of carbon monoxide experience?
➢ Starved of oxygen, lose consciousness
How are oxides of nitrogen formed?
➢ When inside an engine the temperatures are high and the unreactive nitrogen gas reacts with oxygen
