C10.4 Carboxylic acids and esters Flashcards
What is the functional group of ethanoic acid?
COOH
What do carboxylic acids form when they dissolve in water?
Form acidic solutions
What does ethanoic acid make when it reacts with sodium carbonate?
Sodium ethanoate + water + carbon dioxide
Why are carboxylic acids called weak acids?
Carbon dioxide gas is given off more slowly when a metal carbonate reacts with a carboxylic acid as compared to HCL with the same conecnetration
How do acids show their acidic properties?
Dissolve in water
This because in water all acids ionise
What do strong acids do that weak acids don’t?
Ionise completely
A carboxylic acid has a higher PH meaning less concentration of H+ ions than a strong acid resulting in a slower reaction with a metal carbonate
How are esters made?
Reacting the carboxylic acid with alcohols
An acid - usually sulfuric acid is used as a catalyst
What does carboxylic acid + alcohol make?
Ester + water
What properties do esters have?
Have distinctive smells
They are volatile (evaporate easily)
What are the uses of esters?
Makes them ideal to use in perfumes and food flavourings
