C8 - Rates and equilibrium Flashcards
Rate of reaction
The speed at which a reaction happens
Collision theory
An explanation of chemical reactions in terms of particles colliding with sufficient energy for a reaction to take place.
Activation energy
The minimum amount of energy needed to start a reaction.
Concentration
A measure of how much solute is dissolved in a solvent such as water
Catalyst
A substance that speeds up a chemical reaction but remains chemically unchanged itself at the end of the reaction.
Reversible reaction
A reaction in which the products can re-form the reactants
Hydrated
Describes a substance which contains water in its crystals
Anhydrous
Describes a substance that does not contain water
Equilibrium
The point in a reversible reaction at which the forward and backward rates of reaction are the same. Therefore, the amounts of substance present in the reaction mixture remain constanT.
Le Chateliers principle
When a change in conditions is introduced to a system at equilibrium, the position of equilibrium shifts so as to cancel out that change.
Pressure
The force exerted divided by the are on which the force is exerted. (Pa)
