C6 - Electrolysis Flashcards
Electrolyte
A liquid, containing free moving ions, that is broken down by electricity in the process of electrolysis.
Electrolysis
The breakdown of a substance containing ions by electricity.
Electrode
A conductor that acts as a terminal through which electric current passes into a liquid, a solution or an electric circuit. For current to flow there must be a positive and negative electrode
Anode
A positively charged electrode
Cathode
A negatively charged electrode
Inert
Unreactive
Half equations
An equation involving either an oxidation or a reduction process. The electrons lost or gained in this process are shown in the equation.
Cations
Positively charged ions
Anions
Negatively charged ions
Discharged
In electrolysis, to gain or lose electrons at an electrode
